H-28 Consolidation
This
Consolidation has an L&N logo below the engineer's cab which is
unusual since this logo was reserved for dedicated passenger engines and
the Consolidations were freight engines. This Consolidation, in addition,
either has an extra hose on the pilot deck, which I believe is a
steam line, meaning that it had been modified for use as a passenger
engine, most probably on a light branch, possibly the "hook &
eye" line. (original L&N main, Knox. to Atlanta, but now
abandoned or sold to short lines, mostly abandoned).

No. 2126 Eight-Wheel Switcher class C-1
Evansville, IN. October 1948
Although a few of these,
on other roads, were rebuilds of road power, such as Consolidations
(2-8-0) or Mikado types (2-8-2), for heavy switching 34 of L&N's 60
eight-wheel switchers (0-8-0) were home-made C-1s built between 1922 and
1923. The C-1s engines had similar-sized boilers to the homebuilt heavy
2-8-0s. This heavier variety served until well into the diesel
age, and a few were sold to the Woodward Iron Works in Birmingham and
soldiered on into the 60s. One example of this class is preserved
in Birmingham.

No. 2058 Class B-4 Six-Wheel Switcher
Nashville, TN. May 1940
The
L&N had 25 Class B-4 switchers of their almost 100 Type 0-6-0 switchers.
Most were retired
before 1940. They became obsolete with heavier cars, and longer cuts
entering the picture in the 30s. No. 2058 was manufactured in 1903.
