The
J-4 had 27"x32" cylinders, 63" drivers, weighed 323,000
lbs., and developed 63,000 lbs. tractive effort at 200 lbs. boiler
pressure. They were built by Baldwin in 1929 and first operated between
Decoursey and Corbin. They were all later equipped with Franklin Trailer
Truck Boosters which provided an additional 12,075 lbs. of tractive
effort. It was very helpful to start heavy trains and pull over steep
grades.
