Class K-4A Light Pacific
Near Louisville, KY. July, 1948
Class K-4A Light Pacific
(4-6-2) was used on branch lines and lessor trains. Most of these came off of the LH&StL
railroad (or "Texas" which ran from South Louisville, along
the Ohio R. to Henderson, KY), when that line was purchased by the
L&N about 1925, although the L&N had several similar engines,
built at South Louisville, between 1915 and 1925.
The extra digit
was temporarily assigned for accounting purposes when the engine was
built, but became a permanent fixture.

No. 240 Class K-5 Pacific
DeCoursey,
Kentucky
L&N usually
serviced their own engines at DeCoursey rather than let the CUT
(Cincinnati Union Terminal) shop do it. The engine could have
arrived on any number of locals from either Louisville or
Corbin. DeCoursey has been abandoned, but many times CSX wishes
they had not been so hasty to do so. It was, until Radnor was
redone in 1954, the L&N's most modern yard. It is about 5
miles south of the Ohio River alongside the Corbin line.

December
17, 1940. Sebree, KY
Engineer
J.M. Covert leads the first Dixie Flagler train south through
Kentucky on December 17, 1940.
A 29-hour
Chicago to Miami service, the Dixie Flagler's route was C&EI
to Evansville, L&N to Nashville, NC&StL to Atlanta, AB&C to
Waycross, ACL to Jacksonville, and FEC for the final leg to Miami.
AB&C, C&EI, NC&StL, and L&N (pictured here) each streamlined
their Pacific-type engines for the run. The Pacific class engines
L&N used on the South Wind and Dixie Flagler
were L&N's first lightweight streamliners to run on any of its routes.
No
277 was one of three K-5s streamlined by the L&N for the South
Wind and Dixie Flagler, both of which ran every third day.
No. 275 and No. 277 were painted gray with a colorful trim.
